Exploring the rich dialogue between guitar and string quartet, from refined lyricism to folk textures and contemporary rhythmic intensity.
We highlight the guitar’s ability to converse with a string quartet in strikingly different musical worlds. Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Quintet opens with warm, elegant lines that showcase the instrument’s lyrical side, while Iain Grandage’s Black Dogs adds driving rhythmic energy and contemporary Aussie cool. In his Andean Suite, Javier Farias uses bright, folk-inspired rhythms and melodies that evoke the spirit of his native Chile and in another cross-cultural touch, our cellist has to down normal tools briefly and take up his castanets for Boccherini’s Quintet in D major, G.448 Fandango, a traditional Classical piece by the Italian composer until the playful, rhythmically infectious finale that gives the whole quintet and this program its name.
